A new chapter may be unfolding in U.S.–China relations following today’s meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea. The U.S. President announced that the two countries have reached a trade agreement, with the official signing expected in the coming weeks.
“We have a deal. We will renegotiate it every year, but I believe it will last for a very long time,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One after the bilateral talks. He noted that only “a few remaining obstacles” stand before the formal signature, adding: “We discussed many of the elements you talk about all the time. The deal covers almost everything — including soybean trade and tariffs related to fentanyl.”
President Xi Jinping confirmed that negotiators from both nations have reached a basic consensus, stressing that China’s development “is not in contradiction with President Trump’s vision to make America great again,” and that “it is normal for economies of different nations to have friction.”
According to diplomatic sources, the framework agreement focuses on three key areas: gradual tariff reduction, enhanced agricultural market access, and cooperative mechanisms to control the export of chemicals used in synthetic opioids.
If confirmed, the accord would mark the first major step toward trade normalization between Washington and Beijing after years of tensions that have disrupted global supply chains and dampened investor confidence. Analysts suggest that a formal signing could boost market sentiment and pave the way for further discussions on technology, energy, and economic security.
