Garlasco Murder: Has the Nightmare Finally Ended for Alberto Stasi?

More than 18 years after the brutal killing of Chiara Poggi, the Garlasco case — one of Italy’s most controversial and polarizing murder trials — is entering a new and unexpected chapter. For the first time, investigators are openly considering the possibility that Alberto Stasi, the boyfriend long portrayed as the prime suspect and ultimately convicted, may not have been the real killer.

In a dramatic twist, Andrea Sempio, a childhood friend of Chiara’s brother, has become the focus of a fresh investigation. Prosecutors now suspect Sempio could have acted alone or in concert with others in the 2007 murder. The revelation has triggered new police raids at the homes of Sempio’s parents and relatives — a sign that prosecutors believe crucial evidence may still be hidden within the family circle.

Searches Target Relatives of New Suspect Andrea Sempio

But the most explosive development concerns Mario Venditti, the former chief prosecutor of Pavia who oversaw the original investigation. Venditti is now under criminal investigation for judicial corruption, accused of accepting between €20,000 and €30,000 to ensure that the early inquiries into Sempio were swiftly closed. A handwritten note — allegedly penned by Giuseppe Sempio, Andrea’s father — appears to reference the payoff, reading: “Venditti / gip closes X 20-30 euro”, and dated February 2016. Though the case was officially archived in 2017, investigators believe the decision may have been arranged in advance.

Also under investigation are Carabinieri officers Silvio Sapone and Giuseppe Spoto, as well as Sempio himself, his parents, and other family members. The scope of the inquiry suggests that a network of influence and protection may have shielded Sempio from scrutiny for years — even as Stasi faced relentless media vilification and, ultimately, a murder conviction.

The implications are staggering. If the evidence now being pursued proves credible, it could overturn one of the most controversial verdicts in recent Italian legal history and expose a judicial system that may have punished the wrong man. The searches at the homes of Sempio’s relatives, first reported by Tg1, mark a pivotal moment in a case that has haunted Italy for nearly two decades — and could finally bring justice not only to Chiara Poggi, but also to Alberto Stasi.
