Garlasco Murder Case Reopened: Former Prosecutor Mario Venditti Under Investigation for Judicial Corruption
The long-dormant investigation into the 2007 murder of Chiara Poggi — brutally killed on 13 August 2007 in her family home on Via Pascoli in Garlasco — has taken a dramatic turn. Former Pavia chief prosecutor Mario Venditti is now under investigation for judicial corruption, as part of a new inquiry launched by the Brescia Prosecutor’s Office.
According to sources close to the investigation, the case has been reopened following new leads from prosecutors in Pavia, who are exploring the potential involvement of Andrea Sempio, a friend of Poggi’s brother, as a possible co-perpetrator of the murder. Investigators suspect that Venditti may have prematurely and deliberately closed a previous investigation into Sempio, potentially in exchange for financial compensation.
The allegations are supported by archival wiretaps and a handwritten note recovered from a notepad, reportedly stating: “Venditti / gip closes X 20-30 euro”, and dated February 2016. The handwriting is believed to belong to Giuseppe Sempio, Andrea’s father. Curiously, the date precedes the actual dismissal of the case, which occurred in 2017, suggesting the decision may have been prearranged.
A search warrant signed by Brescia deputy prosecutor Claudia Moregola and chief prosecutor Francesco Prete further alleges that, in 2017, Venditti received an illicit payment between €20,000 and €30,000 to ensure a favorable outcome for Andrea Sempio. In addition to Venditti, the investigation also targets Carabinieri officers Silvio Sapone and Giuseppe Spoto, Andrea Sempio himself, his parents, and several relatives.
Meanwhile, searches are currently underway at the home of Sempio’s parents, as investigators seek additional evidence in this new phase of the Garlasco murder investigation. The development — which could radically reshape the narrative around one of Italy’s most controversial criminal cases — was first reported by Tg1’s social media channels.
