Corsera France How Macron is changing French deterrence for the defense of Europe

The Head of State's desire to "Europeanize" France's nuclear deterrence capacity and to broaden the debate to conventional tools takes into account, according to experts, a possible return of Donald Trump to the White House, against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

This time, Emmanuel Macron's short sentences did not spark international controversies, but rather a series of questions about his intentions. A week after the Sorbonne speech, delivered on Thursday April 25 by the Head of State, France's partners are still wondering what he really meant when he stressed that French nuclear deterrence was “an essential element in the defense of the European continent”.

On these delicate subjects, especially in the midst of the Ukrainian war, it is rare for a head of state to indulge in improvised remarks. Two days after his speech, Emmanuel Macron also made a point of clarifying his views in an interview with a dozen young people in Strasbourg, published by the regional press group Ebra.
