The story of Roya Heshmati, an Iranian activist who opposes the use of the compulsory veil in Tehran, is going around the world. She was punished with 74 lashes for spreading a photo of herself without the hijab, i.e. the veil, taken on Keshavarz Boulevard in Tehran. The story was disclosed by Hengaw, a Kurdish human rights NGO based in Norway.

I didn't count the blows: I sang in the name of the woman, in the name of life". Roya Heshmati, 33 years old, thus describes on her Facebook page the interminable minutes in which the lashes imposed by an Iranian court as punishment for not wearing the hijab, the Islamic veil: 74 lashes inflicted with a black leather whip that the officer in charge of carrying out the punishment "wrapped twice around his hand" so that the grip was more surer, firmer, more painful.

It was January 3rd, she didn't cry or scream, she concentrated on that room, "a medieval torture chamber", to tell the world what happens in the Islamic republic, at best, to the unfortunate people who claim the elementary right to choose what to wear. "The iron door creaked open, revealing a room with concrete walls. At the far end a bed equipped with handcuffs and iron bands welded on both sides. In the center of the room an iron device similar to a large easel, complete of slots for the handcuffs and a rusty iron binding in the center". On that bed, in the first section of the seventh district prosecutor's office in Tehran, Roya was made to lie down after being handcuffed and after a woman in a chador, an employee of the court, forced that hijab onto her head, which not even for undergo the whippings he had wanted to wear. And precisely for this stubborn refusal she risked a new sentence of another 74 lashes.

The activist was also sentenced to one year of suspended prison and was banned from leaving the country for three years. A mockery, given that the judge in charge of executing the sentence, Roya continues, suggested that she "live abroad for a different life" and was told to reaffirm her "commitment to resistance" against the regime of the ayatollahs and against the denial of human rights, for women first and foremost, of which the obligation to wear the hijab is the symbol.

In September another woman, the engineer Zaynab Kazemi, removed her veil in public in protest during an event organized by Tehran's engineers. And the video, which went viral, had also cost her a sentence of 74 lashes with the sentence suspended for five years in the absence of repetition of the crime. The ax of the law also falls on "actresses who have appeared in public, taking off their hijab" who "are prohibited from working", announced the Minister of Culture and Islamic Orientation, Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili, in October.
