The Queen’s funeral service will take place at Westminster Abbey in ten days’ time, the first funeral service at the Abbey for a British monarch since that of George II in 1760.
Ever since George III, the funerals of British kings and queens have been at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. In a break with tradition the Queen decided that hers should be in the larger and more public surroundings of Westminster Abbey, where the coronation of every English monarch has been held since William I in 1066.
